Trustwave SpiderLabs Security Advisory TWSL2015-004: "Probe" login access vulnerability in SAP ASE Published: 04/23/2015 Version: 1.0 Vendor: SAP (www.sap.com) Product: Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) Version affected: 12.5, 15.0, 15.5, 15.7, 16.0 Product description: Relational database management system for UNIX, Linux, and Microsoft Windows platforms. Finding 1: SAP ASE "probe" login access vulnerability Credit: Martin Rakhmanov of Trustwave CVE: CVE-2014-6284 CWE: CWE-287 SAP ASE ships with a login named "probe" used for the two-phase commit probe process, which uses a challenge and response mechanism to access Adaptive Server. There is a flaw in implementation of the challenge and response mechanism that allows anyone to access the server as "probe" login. While the "probe" is not a privileged account, other flaws exist that allow privilege elevation from regular database user to database administrator. Combined with such privilege elevation vulnerabilities this one allows complete takeover of the database server. The proof of concept is available at https://github.com/SpiderLabs/advisories-poc/blob/master/cve-2014-6284/probe.c Remediation Steps: Apply one of these following vendor supplied patches: ASE 15.7 SP132 ASE 16.0 SP01 Revision History: 01/15/2014 - Vulnerability disclosed 04/22/2015 - SAP published security note 2113995 04/23/2015 - Advisory published References 1. https://websmp230.sap-ag.de/sap/support/notes/2113995 2. https://github.com/SpiderLabs/advisories-poc/blob/master/cve-2014-6284/probe.c About Trustwave: Trustwave helps businesses fight cybercrime, protect data and reduce security risks.
